Although this is a standalone novel, it does feature characters from In Life, In Death, and continues the story of Xochititlan (the eponymous City by the Flowers). The world might be a bit easier to understand if you’ve read the first novella.
Regardless, I hope you enjoy A Coward, A Warrior as much as I enjoyed writing it. I love Kwaotli. He’s been an absolute joy to write, and the little bit of painting I’ve done in the past few months seems to circle back to art of him. I think I’ll end up writing more stories featuring Kwaotli, even if they are just short ones, because he was so much fun. (There’s a reason he ended up in A Poet, A Prince…. )
I did a bunch of research on wilderness survival for this novel. I’m not much of a camper in real life, and I’m pretty sure I’d be one of the first to die during a zombie apocalypse due to my complete lack of skills. At least I know how much is theoretically possible now! (I really enjoyed the Primitive Technology youtube channel, very educational and soothing to watch!)
I’m sure I screwed up some wilderness survival stuff (one of my beta readers nit-picked about the type of wood they were using! 😂 ) but it’s more accurate now than my first draft!
